Apple Pie with Green Tomatoes

2 1/2 to 3 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples

2  1/2 to 3 cups thinly sliced green tomatoes

1/2 to 2/3 cup white or brown sugar

 1/8 t. salt

 1 to 1 1/2 T cornstarch

 1/4 t. cinnamon

 1/8 t. nutmeg

 Pie Crust

 1 1/2 T. butter

Line a 9 inch pie pan with a raw pie crust. Combine the apples and tomatoes in a large mixing bowl. Combine the sugar, salt, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg and sift over the apples and tomatoes. Only very tart apples require the larger amount of sugar. Stir the apples and tomatoes gently until they are well coated. Place them in layers in the pie shell. Dot them with the butter, cut into small cubes. If the apples are bland, sprinkle them with 1 T. lemon juice. Cover the pie with a prickled upper crust. Lightly brush the surface of the upper crust with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes and then reduce the heat to 350 degrees, cooking for another 40-50 minutes (45-60 minutes in all). The result is a deliciously tart apple pie with a twist!
